If you have a son that pitches, are you guilty of yelling these things from the stands? My son, Kade is a pitcher and I admit.....I'M GUILTY! I could go on and on about how silly I must sound in the stands and how loud I yell, but this blog isn't about me....THANK GOODNESS! HA! Instead I'm going to tell you some things I do with Kade to help prevent arm injuries while he is pitching. Now, will he NEVER get hurt because his mommy has him to do these things? Absolutely NOT, but we do try to be proactive to prevent unnecessary injuries. Which is a good point. We all need to be proactive in our own daily lives to prevent unnecessary sickness or injuries, not just when it comes to sports. Maintenance works! You have to be proactive to keep your body healthy just like you have to maintenance your car to keep it running;) And yes his arm does get sore. Overworked, repetitive motions will cause soreness at one time or another, so again....BE PROACTIVE! Ok, off my soap box and moving on. What do I do to keep my #9 healthy on the mound? #1: SPINAL ADJUSTMENTS: misalignments of your spine or extremities alter proper biomechanics which in turn increase your risk of injury. It's that simple! And I'm going to say this one time so LISTEN UP!!!!!!! Unless you are superhuman, EVERYONE (did you read that) EVERYONE gets misalignments! And just because you don't have pain DOES NOT mean you don't have a problem! The key is maintenance.......fix it before it starts causing a problem. (FYI: All MLB teams have their own chiropractors :)) #2: PROPER NUTRITION: proper water intake and nutritional supplements to support muscles, bones, ligaments, etc. (FYI: Gatorade/Powerade has lots of sugar in them and can dehydrate you even more so drink minimally). The 2 main nutritional supplements I use if Kade has an injury is Acute (natural anti-inflammatory) and Ligaplex II (strengthens ligaments). (more information on these supplements at the bottom of the page); #3: THE STICK: If you don't have one of these and your kids play sports....get one ASAP! I'll post a picture of it at the bottom so you can see what I'm talking about. It does several different things: warms the muscle, stretches the muscle, removes trigger point barriers, enhances strength, enhances flexibility, enhances endurance and blood flow, accelerates recovery by removing lactic acid, and reduces pain. Many professional athletes from the Olympic cycling team, to professional football/basketball/baseball players use THE STICK. I can't say enough good things about it. We use them in our office and our patients love them. It's great if you do repetitive motions, which pitching definitely fits in the repetitive motion category. So in conclusion, I may not be doing everything right as a mom of a pitcher.... the yelling, the screaming, the jumping up and down (eye roll) but when my son's arm is hurting and he walks up to me and says "Mom I think you need to check my elbow, it's really sore." I. HAVE. DONE. ONE. THING. RIGHT!!!!! BE PROACTIVE!
