Step out of your COMFORT ZONE!!!

January 4, 2019

It seems all I blog about is sports!  Sorry about that but with a 14 year old boy that's about all my life consists of!  Going to ball games and washing stinky practice clothes...but I wouldn't have it any other way:)  Ha!  Kade has been playing baseball and basketball ever since he was 5 years old.  His friend, Eli, has been too.  These two boys have played one of these sports together as far back as I can remember.  That's how they actually became friends.  So fast forward about 9 years.....these two boys are now 14 years old and 8th graders.  They decided after all this time that they are going to try out for FOOTBALL!!! Did you read that?  I said Football!!!  Now I know most of you are huge football fans and I'm not going to say I don't watch it but it SCARES me to death.  I don't mind watching it when my kid isn't playing.  Ha!  I really don't know anything about the sport other than the injuries that arise from it.  So you can imagine my reaction when Kade comes home and says he's going to try and play football this year!  So here's how the conversation went....

Kade:  Mom I've decided to play football.

Me:  Kade, You don't even own a football, Do you know what one even looks like?

Kade:  Yes Mom (insert eye roll)

Me:  Ok whatever you want to do, but you realize if you get hurt you may not be healed in time to play basketball and baseball

Kade:  I know Mom, (insert another eye roll).

Me:  What position will you play?

Kade:  I don't know yet.

Me:  What about Kicker ( I might know a little about football ha)

Kade:  NO MOM (insert another eye roll)

And.....That's how it went down, I did good huh?  No screaming, no saying you can't play, no crying....  You all thought I was going to freak out, right????  Wanna know why I remained calm?  Because before he told me this was happening a little birdie had messaged me on Facebook and told me. So I prepared myself.  Sooo.....take that kid!!!  I. DID. GOOD.   Now, I'm not sure how it was handled at Eli's house but remember he has never played football either.  So I'm sure it was sort of the same.   They started practicing over the summer.  I worry that the coaches don't realize these two have never played before.  I ask a million and one questions after each practice. Everything seems to be going good.  Kade says they tell me to run and catch the ball and that's what I do.  Eli is told to block somebody and he does. So I'm thinking to myself.... OMG they may be doing ok with this.  I asked again....Kade, so they throw the ball to you, and you catch it?   YES MOM I CAN CATCH IT!  So Kade, Eli is tackling and blocking people....YES MOM HE IS!  Wow, I'm in shock.  I mean I knew they were athletic and big but to step into a sport they both literally knew little about.  I'm a little proud, impressed, and amazed that these two awkward, smelly boys stepped out of their comfort zone and tried something new.  They actually weren't bad; they actually were pretty good!  NOT GREAT, but good.  They actually were good enough to play!  I think the coaches performed two miracles. I stepped out of my comfort zone a little too! I 'm not saying I did well watching it....because I didn't at all!!!!  When I eventually learned how to tell which one was my kid on the field (that's a whole other story)....I covered my eyes a lot, I screamed a lot,  I secretly tackled the other players running after my kid in my head, and I wore my baseball t-shirt under my clothes just because it made me feel better.  (No lie I actually did that) Ha! Ha!   My husband probably wishes I had stayed at home during the games and realizes he may never be able to teach me the rules of football......but I did it!!!  And even though I wanted Kade to have the position as water boy, I stepped out of my comfort zone.... watched my kid get tackled, pushed, head butted, and I even watched him get touchdowns.  It was HARD!!!!

NOW HOW LONG IS IT UNTIL BASEBALL SEASON BECAUSE THAT'S MY COMFORT ZONE?!?!
